Spring Island Residence Showcased in Savannah Magazine

Savannah Magazine’s supplement, Spring/Summer Homes 2012, features a fantastic eight-page article on the Mike and Susan Neilson’s Spring Island home. Allison Hersch captures the essence of the luxe retreat, along with beautiful photography by Richard Leo Johnson.

The Neilson’s home is also showcased among a dozen other exceptional residences in Coming Home: The Southern Vernacular House. Described as a sourcebook of great ideas and innovative details, Coming Home is collection of homes created by the award-winning firm Historical Concepts, the Neilson’s Atlanta Architecture and Design Firm.

Savannah Magazine is currently available on newsstands.

Spring Island Trust Native Plant Project SPRING SALE

The Spring Island Trust Native Plant Project Spring Sale will take place this Saturday, April 14th, from 9 am to 1 pm at the Mobley Oaks Baseball Field. More than 100 species of native plants are for sale including wildflowers, native vines, shrubs, trees, ferns and grasses. Plants cost $6 to $12, check or cash only. Members of the Native Plant Project will be on hand to answer questions. Proceeds benefit the Spring Island Trust.

Now in its third year, the Spring Island Trust Native Plant Project is dedicated to the propagation and distribution of native plants, and to providing education about how to use them in yards and public spaces.

Doggie Dip — a Real Tail Wagger!

The first annual Doggie Dip was held at the Sports Complex Pool on Monday, March 12th, and attracted over forty canines of all sizes, ages and breeds. The pets, that are normally not allowed in the pool area, were invited for a special swim before the scheduled draining and cleaning of the pool.

It was hard to tell who was having more fun - the dogs or their owners, but there was definitely a whole lot of shaking going on! The dogs swam, dove, fetched and frolicked in the pool for three hours. Some stayed with their owners while others went nuts playing with new friends. Others, especially the smaller ones, wore life preservers. Treats for both canines and humans were also enjoyed.

Osprey Pond Fish Move a Success

As part of the golf course renovation, over 1,300 bass and bream (valued at more than $6,000) have been successfully relocated to other ponds on Spring Island due to the draining of Osprey Pond. Included in the fish saved was a ten pound trophy bass which was relocated to the Upper Goose Pond. The remaining fish have been moved to the following ponds: Old Tabby Links, Deep Pond, and Twin Pipes.

Old Tabby Links Renovations Creating a Buzz

Frequently cited as one of America’s best courses, Old Tabby Links closing for restoration on March 12^th was picked up by the media with stories in CyberGolf, World Golf, and the Island Packet to name a few.

Arnold Palmer Design Company and MacCurrach Golf Construction are heading up the project with plans for a new state-of-the-art irrigation system, regrassed greens and other enhancements to restore the natural beauty and rugged character of the course.

The work is scheduled to be completed in the fall, with Old Tabby reopening this November.

Proceeding from past Spring Island surveys of the overall classical piano repertoire, this seminar will focus upon piano writing emanating from three discrete cultural centers over the past two centuries.

In three two-hour sessions, Arthur Tollefson will focus upon the keyboard output of the German, French and American traditions. As in his 2008 and 2010 seminars, the presentations will be illustrated with copious live performances of excerpts exemplifying the three cities’ pianistic legacy.

CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES OF CLASSICAL PAINTING

In this workshop, James Sulkowski discusses the effects of light and atmosphere as they relate to forms in space. This timeless Old Master approach results in a luminous painting full of depth and rich in color. The palette, background colors, composition, form and texture will also be a focus of this workshop.

The quality and characteristics of various flowers and still life objects such as glass, copper, porcelain and more are broken down to their simplest concepts.

Demonstrations plus personal instruction will enable the student to understand, simplify and apply these classic principles to their own work.

Rice Gates Installation (11/7-11/8)

The rice gates are going to be installed at the Shrimp Pond this Monday & Tuesday. This is a fascinating process to watch! This operation must occur at low tide which is at noon so the most interesting time to watch will be between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. each day. On Monday, the best place to view the activity is by parking on the cul-de-sac of Shrimp Pond Circle and walking down the trail easement to the pond. On Tuesday, park along Walker House Landing and walk down the trail easement that leads to the fishing dock. Each day we will gather at a location along the edge of the pond that provides the best vantage point and will describe what the crew is doing and how rice gates work.

Spring Island History Trail Dedication

The Spring Island Trust will hold the dedication of the Spring Island History Trail on Friday, November 18th at the Tabby Ruins Gazebo at 1:30 pm. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a tour of the trail will be given to members and their guests.
