Charleston, South Carolina

Ninety minutes from Spring Island, Charleston is known as The Holy City, thanks to the myriad steeples that dot its splendid skyline. Practically synonymous with southern refinement and grace, it was named the “best-mannered city in the US” by Marjabelle Young Stewart, the nation’s foremost expert in etiquette. One of the country’s oldest and most significant cities, Charleston maintains a Historic District that’s virtually a living museum.

Charleston was founded in 1670, and its distinguished history is a vibrant presence throughout the city. Eighteenth century homes and plantations abound, public buildings remain in use after hundreds of years, ancient plants and trees flourish in spectacular gardens, and residents reflect the warmth and hospitality of a bygone era. On a more contemporary note, Charleston also has countless art galleries, specialty shops, antique dealers, fine restaurants, home and gardens tours, museums, and a first rate aquarium.

Just over the Arthur Ravenel/Cooper River Bridge, the once sleepy little fishing village of Mt. Pleasant has become an extension of Charleston and a wonderful destination in its own right.  The Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, the Shem Creek area for dining and browsing, and the Mt. Pleasant Towne Centre shopping center, are just a few of its highlights.
