What an honor it must be to be asked to give the commencement address at your alma mater! Bill Sampson was afforded just such an honor recently when he was asked to return to his hometown of Elizabethton, Tennessee and deliver the address to the Class of 2012. Elizabethton High School has created the Billy Sampson Golf Award, which is given to a senior male and female for being best golfer who also gives back to the community. Bill also assisted with handing out diplomas to the graduates. He said the entire experience was far more moving than he anticipated. In typical Bill Sampson humor, when he found out the school wanted to reimburse his travel costs to deliver the address, he said, “If I can’t afford to pay my way home for this, you might have chosen the wrong speaker”. In addition, Bill humbly accepted the honorarium and proceeded to donate the money to his favorite charity “Folds of Honor” in the name of the Elizabethton High School Class of 2012. Way to go, Pro!
From Bill Sampson, Director of Golf, Spring Island
I would like to send a big “Thank You” to everyone who participated in the Folds of Honor Foundation’s Patriot Golf Day 2011. Spring Island raised over $28,000—more than doubling our contribution from 2010! It is very encouraging and rewarding to receive such great support for such a wonderful cause.
I would like to share a few messages I received from those in the throes:
“With your efforts and the generosity of the Old Tabby Links members, you single-handedly change someone’s life.” –Patrick Jones, Navy Pilot
“How does it feel knowing that what you did will put one dependant through college?” -Sergeant Major Cliff Burgoyne
“…your efforts combined to make this a record breaking year for us.” -Major Dan "Noonan" Rooney (Folds of Honor Founder)
“Billy…this is a very special effort by you and your members.” -Ron Schmid, Executive Director, Carolinas PGA Section
Bill Sampson, Director of Golf, played a total of 144 holes on Sunday, September 4th for the Folds of Honor Foundation and made 15 birdies in the process. A small gallery followed Sampson throughout the last 9 holes which enabled him to finish strong with birdies on #17 and #18 in front of his cheering fans.
Please check back later this week to read about the final donation that will be made to the Folds of Honor Foundation from the Spring Island Club.
Way to go, Bill!
