Spring Island Trust

The Spring Island Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of Spring Island’s environment and cultural history. The Trust manages the island’s nature preserves and wildlife, sponsors educational and cultural programs for residents, and provides technical expertise to the community on landscaping, land management, and other environmental issues.

During the development of Spring Island (1990 to 1999), the Spring Island Trust worked closely with the developers to ensure sound land management practices, thereby safeguarding the original environmental integrity and cultural heritage of the Island. In 2000, the developers turned governance of Spring Island over to the Spring Island Property Owners Association (SIPOA). The Spring Island Trust Board and the SIPOA Board work in partnership together to ensure that all of Spring Island’s 3,000 acres are maintained as a residential community within a nature preserve.

Native Plant Project

Wanting to preserve the diversity of plants indigenous to Spring Island, a team of volunteers assembled in March of 2009 under the direction of Spring Island Landscape Ecologist Karl Ohlandt. In addition to plant preservation, the team’s goals are to educate members about native plants and how to grow them, to increase the availability of native plants to homeowners and to maintain a positive stewardship for our beautiful island.

The Spring Island Trust has two main facilities that are used by members and staff, including a climate controlled greenhouse and a native plant nursery, containing over 2,500 plants.

Since its inception, the team has educated members on the harvesting, propagation and nurturing of native plants in the form of workshops, Trust Talks and field trips.  Greenhouse and nursery work are also gaining popularity on the Island.
