Spring Island has a rich upland game hunting tradition. Quail hunting at Spring Island dates from the early 1900’s and for many years Spring Island was regarded as one of the great coastal hunting plantations.
After hunting on Spring Island for many years, a decision was made to relocate to the mainland and since 1996 the Club has leased Pleasant Hill Plantation for that purpose. The move expanded the hunting grounds and gave our members access to 2,600 acres of prime South Carolina pinelands and open fields to hunt. Those with a passion for hunting and preserving the heritage of the sport will appreciate the thoughtfully maintained and managed property, providing excellent hunting habitat for even the most discriminating hunter.
Quail hunting at Spring Island is still done in the traditional manner from horseback and accompanied by a mule-drawn wagon to transport the bird dogs. The Hunt Club is managed by Huntmaster William Fripp, whose involvement with Spring Island dates from 1972.
One of the highlights of any visit to Pleasant Hill is the midday lunch at the Plantation House. Authentic southern cuisine including fried chicken, black-eyed peas, cornbread and greens are served to the delight of hunters.
Pleasant Hill Plantation is available to Spring Island members for quail shooting from mid-October to mid-March.
